{"id":2305,"date":"2026-08-15T00:02:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T00:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yourfinancerules.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/15\/fast-growing-chicken-chain-closes-207-restaurants-cuts-expansion\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T00:02:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T00:02:43","slug":"fast-growing-chicken-chain-closes-207-restaurants-cuts-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yourfinancerules.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/15\/fast-growing-chicken-chain-closes-207-restaurants-cuts-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast-growing chicken chain closes 207 restaurants, cuts expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A restaurant giant that built a global footprint rapidly by opening new locations worldwide is now pulling back on its expansion plans as weaker results and higher costs pressure its business.<\/p>\n<p>The company closed more than 200 stores during the first half of 2026 and has lowered its target for new openings this year, signaling a more cautious approach to growth even as it continues expanding internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1975, the Jollibee Foods Corp. restaurant group has more than 10,000 stores across 33 countries under 19 brands, including Jollibee, Coffee Bean &amp; Tea Leaf, Smashburger, Chowking, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Jollibee closes restaurants and cuts expansion<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/starbucks-rival-targets-comeback-after-dozens-of-store-closures-the-coffee-bean-tea-leaf\">Jollibee Foods Corp.<\/a> closed 207 stores during the first half of 2026 and now plans to scale back its expansion as weaker financial results and higher costs weigh on the business.<\/p>\n<p>The company plans to open 1,000 to 1,100 new stores by the end of 2026, below its previous target of 1,200 to 1,300.<\/p>\n<p>Jollibee also lowered its capital expenditure forecast to between \u20b113 billion and \u20b115 billion ($212 million to $245 million), compared with its previous plan of up to \u20b116 billion, announced during the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The company has cited higher costs and geopolitical pressures, including the impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/retail\/apple-closes-all-stores-in-uae\">Middle East conflict<\/a>, as factors affecting its financial performance.<\/p>\n<p>Jollibee&#8217;s net income declined 13.3% to \u20b14.87 billion ($79.31 million) in the first half of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The results led the company to also lower its full-year same-store sales growth target to 3% to 4% from 4% to 6%. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/o\/operating-income\" rel=\"nofollow\">operating income<\/a> growth forecast was also reduced to 10% to 15%, down from 15% to 18%.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Jollibee is closing locations and reducing expansion plans<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/landrys-restaurant-closures-del-friscos-steakhouse\">store closures<\/a> are part of Jollibee&#8217;s portfolio optimization strategy, and the reduced opening target indicates that the company is slowing its expansion rather than abandoning growth.<\/p>\n<p>Management emphasized productivity, sourcing, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/beard-papas-store-closures\">cost-discipline<\/a> initiatives as it works to protect margins while continuing to invest in markets where it sees opportunities for long-term growth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pricing actions implemented beginning in April, together with productivity, sourcing, and cost discipline initiatives, contributed to the recovery in gross profit margins,&#8221; said Jollibee CFO Richard Shin during the company&#8217;s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/e\/earnings-call\" rel=\"nofollow\">earnings call<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/business\/retail\/jollibee-looks-to-slow-global-expansion-plans-as-higher-costs-bite-1.500637210\">Gulf News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy allows Jollibee to continue opening hundreds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/noodles-and-company-restaurant-closures-2026\">restaurants<\/a> as it moderates the pace of investment in its broader portfolio.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Jollibee closes restaurants and scales back expansion plans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2285291705\">James Leynse &amp;sol; Getty Images<\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Jollibee&#8217;s fast growth<\/h2>\n<p>Although Jollibee is lowering its expansion plans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/cracker-barrel-sells-maple-street-biscuit-company\">closing stores<\/a>, international expansion and franchise-led growth remain key parts of its strategy, with Canada, Vietnam, and China among its priority markets.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines remains the largest revenue contributor, followed by China and North America.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/author\/fernanda-tronco\">my previous coverage<\/a>\u00a0of restaurant closures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/breakfast-republic-closing-restaurants-2026\">Popular breakfast chain closes more restaurants<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/gringos-locos-closes-all-restaurants\">17-year-old Mexican restaurant chain closes all locations<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/wendys-more-restaurant-closures-turnaround\">57-year-old burger chain closed 28 restaurants, 100s more coming<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jollibee increased its global store network by 6.4% year over year to 10,767 stores, reflecting 461 gross new store openings and the addition of 172 stores from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jollibeegroup.com\/news\/jollibee-group-advances-korea-growth-platform-with-ftc-approved-shabu-all-day-deal\/\">acquisition of Shabu All Day<\/a>, South Korea&#8217;s largest all-you-can-eat hot pot chain.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s store growth illustrates why the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/p\/pullback\" rel=\"nofollow\">pullback<\/a> is better characterized as a slowing of expansion rather than a retreat from growth. Even after closing 207 locations in the first half, Jollibee&#8217;s overall network continued to expand, as new openings and acquisitions more than offset those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/retail\/pressed-juicery-closing-locations-nationwide\">closures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jollibee has expanded rapidly through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/65-year-old-fast-food-chain-sues-major-operator-after-mass-closures-hardees\">franchise model<\/a>, with approximately 70% of its stores franchised as of the last reported quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Its total store network comprised 3,516 stores in the Philippines and 7,251 stores internationally, including 340 in North America.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/restaurants\/tiffani-faison-closes-restaurants-shares-troubling-reason-why\">Related: Food Network chef shuts down restaurants, for a troubling reason<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A restaurant giant that built a global footprint rapidly by opening new locations worldwide is now pulling back on its expansion plans as weaker results and higher costs pressure its business.
